Liverpool are wanting to trim down their squad but it means selling players who may feel hard done by.

The Reds have brought in five new arrivals already this summer, six if you include goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, meaning their squad is pretty packed.

Before making any more signings, however, they will want to offload some fringe players, but they may even sell some integral ones if the price is right.

Richard Hughes is already working hard behind the scenes to do this and over the next month, fans might be left upset by some of those who depart Anfield, with the Reds needing to be ruthless.

They are already close to agreeing a sale and it appeared on the surface to be a fantastic move all-round, but now it might be considered a mistake.

The Under 21 European Championships were not only a huge success for England but for Liverpool too, with three of their players shining en route to lifting the trophy.

One of these was centre-back Jarell Quansah who was excellent throughout, but especially in the final, with the 22-year-old performing despite the added pressure of an impending move.

However, despite the Reds agreeing a £35m move for the Englishman to Bayer Leverkusen, that also includes a buy-back option, Ben Foster believes that this could be a huge mistake and they should even consider cancelling it altogether.

“In the final he was brilliant.

Whenever he had any space in front of him, he would just exploit it.

With the ball at his feet he is so comfortable and he is so big as well,” Foster said on the Football Fill In.

“He would just run into the space in front of him which causes absolute mayhem for the opposition as at some point, someone in the midfield has to go into there which creates a gap behind them and it’s carnage.

“I’m thinking, £35m?

If I’m Liverpool I almost want to cancel it last second and go ‘you know what, I know you might not play every game, but you will definitely play a big chunk’, honestly he will.

“I think he’s the future of Liverpool or would have been anyway.

Leverkusen will be buzzing to get him through the door.”

The Reds need to think long and hard about whether to confirm the sale of Quansah or not because if they regret it, it will come at a significant price.

The buy-back clause in Quansah’s Leverkusen deal is worth around £51m, a fee that seems fairly reasonable considering he could be sold for just £16m less if add-ons are reached.

However, it would not be able to be activated until 2027, meaning they could be left to rue their decision for a few years at least.

Hughes has certainly agreed a deal that benefits both clubs but after his excellent performance at the Euros, perhaps it is not as good as it first looked.
